Sphynx and allergy.

This is not truth that sphynx is an ideal cat for every allergy sufferer.

The colloquial opinion, that this breed is hipoallergenic is wrong.

However, in this case a struggle with pathologic factor – allergen is easier and more effective than in cats with fur.

Sphynx, like each cat, owns the allergen with uroglobulin Fel d 1, which is called the main cat allergen.

Fel d 1 exists in saliva – low concentration, in suet excreted by skin – high concentration. It doesn’t exist in the urine and plasma. Vestigial amount of the allergen Fel d 1 was also found in the brain, eyeballs, thyroid, ovaries and intestines.

The cat brings the allergen from the saliva by cleaning its fur with the tongue. The highest concentration of the allergen is in the hair follicle, by its root. When the epidermis peels out, it rises into the air together with a dead hair. This is the strongest allergen.

Sphynx is the hairless cat, so one of the factor spreading the allergen is eliminated. Skin of this cat excretes more suet, so more allergen exists on it. On the other hand, it greases skin and makes it more elastic, which protects from peeling. The epidermis doesn’t peel as heavily and doesn’t rise into the air in comparison with other cats.

About 90% of Fel d 1 can be reduced by taking a bath each week. This low level of the allergen after the bath exists around one week.

Normal cat with fur bathes “once, twice a year or even at all and it has a high level of the allergen Fel d 1. It causes strong allergic reactions”.

CURIOUS DETAIL: female, which is not sterilized has more sebaceous glands and is more allergenic than male.

It is known, that sterilization reduces the amount of the sebaceous excretion and the level of the allergen Fel d 1 on the skin.

In most cases people are allergic to Fel d 1. Before they buy this cat, they should spend some time at home, where sphynx lives.
